Engineers create fingernail-size chip that holds 1TB of data

Labels: ,

Engineers have created a new fingernail-size chip that can hold 1 trillion bytes (a terabyte) of data -- 50 times the capacity of today's best silicon-based chip technologies.

The engineers, from North Carolina State University, said their nanostructured Ni-MgO system can store up to 20 high-definition DVDs or 250 million pages of text, "far exceeding the storage capacities of today's computer memory systems."

The team of engineers was led by Jagdish "Jay" Narayan, director of the National Science Foundation Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures at the university.

The engineers made their breakthrough using the process of selective doping, in which an impurity is added to a material whose properties consequently change.

Pixlr : Online Adobe Photoshop?

Labels:

Last night my cousin told me that his mom is admitted at the hospital due to highblood pressure. I went there the morning after then I stayed there the whole day, when I got back to home I was so tired but I still I check my email before going to sleep. And yeah, I got an email from my classmate spamming what he found on the net, the subject was "ONLINE ADOBE PHOTOSHOP" so I open it and it has only a link inside...it's http://pixlr.com/editor. I'm not an expert but I know Adobe Photoshop so I give it a try, I click the link and was amazed...

At first, I told myself that this would be same as other online photo editor I know which is really not that good. But this one is more advance, it really looks like Photoshop(although its only about 30% of photoshop's funtionality but it is really cool), actually you can say that it is a mini photoshop that works on your browser, this got the tools, brushes, filters, layers etc. It can open .PSD files too. It has also a firefox plugin to open images and screen grabs from the web direct to the pixlr image editor.

The only shit is that you can't do the rightclick thingy since this is made in flash. But
if you like photo editing and don't have adobe photoshop installed on your computer, just give pixlr a try, I promise it's awesome...

Video appears in paper magazines

Labels: ,

The first-ever video advertisement will be published in a traditional paper magazine in September.

The video-in-print ads will appear in select copies of the US show business title Entertainment Weekly.

The slim-line screens - around the size of a mobile phone display - also have rechargeable batteries.

The chip technology used to store the video - described as similar to that used in singing greeting cards - is activated when the page is turned.

Each chip can hold up to 40 minutes of video.

The first clips will preview programmes from US TV network CBS and show adverts by the drinks company Pepsi.

They will appear in 18 September editions of the magazine distributed in Los Angeles and New York.

It's believed the new technology will cost much more than normal print ads.

However, BBC correspondent Rajesh Mirchandani said that in an increasingly competitive market, advertisers have realised that it is more important than ever to create attention for their product.

He likened the technology to the Daily Prophet - a newspaper with moving pictures described in the Harry Potter books.

It is not the first time that publishers have experimented with digital technology in magazines.

Last year, for example, men's lifestyle magazine Esquire published the first using e-ink technology, with a cover that flashed in alternating patterns.

E-ink is the technology used in the Sony Reader and Amazon Kindle electronic books.

Americhip, the developer of video-in-print, has also created magazine technology that appeals to various senses, including smell.

Very cool, I think this was inspired from the newspapers on the Harry Potter movie. Magazine publishers are becoming geeky now. lol :)

Intel's new hexa-core Core i9 Processors to be Lauched Q1 2010

Labels: ,

Quote:

Several partners and sources close to Intel have recently been known to address the upcoming 32nm Gulftown 6-core monster as Intel Core i9. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that the company is structuring its Core lineup to feature odd numbers, beginning with its dual-core lineup also known as Core i3.

As we’ve mentioned several times before, the 32nm Gulftown 6-core (or hexa-core) chip will launch in 1H 2010 as the first chip in the Westmere family, the successor to Nehalem. Intel Core i9 will appeal to a highly enthusiast market niche, as it is based solely on socket LGA 1366 and retains compatibility with the X58 chipset which isn’t going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

From a clearly analytical perspective, Core i9 Gulftown can be viewed as Core i7 + 2, with six physical cores, a total thread count of 12 and a 50 percent L3 cache increase over Core i7 Bloomfield. We should also remind enthusiasts that Gulftown will not include an IGP core alongside the 32nm CPU, so nothing changes on the graphics front.

The above quote is kinda dated, but there seems to be some newly leaked pictures in the link below. This appears to be for extreme desktops and servers. Hexa-core processor... sounds cool!

Google launch new operating system

Labels: ,

Google is developing an operating system (OS) for personal computers, in a direct challenge to market leader Microsoft and its Windows system. Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well. Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

"Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS," the firm said in its official blog.

The operating system, which will run on an open source licence, was a "natural extension" of its Chrome browser, the firm said. The news comes just months before Microsoft launches the latest version of its operating system, called Windows 7.

Chrome was a lot faster than IE7, let's see how Google's OS compares to Win7.
It sounds good and exciting and the best thing is it is open source. I do hope they meet tech-xpectations and i do also hope it should be hassle free with driver compatibility issues.

Solved: PSP - USB Device Not Recognized

Labels:

I was trying to connect my PSP to my computer but when I connected the USB to the PSP an error message pops up on the taskbar stating: "One of the devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." And when I clicked the message as instructed a window pops up with heading USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED and the location of the "unknown device" was listed but not using the unused USB port. This puzzles me. How come my computer does not recognize the PSP unit? I tried plugging in my USB Flash drive and it was working fine.

Its for my little brother's birthday which I bought a month advance to try it myself because I want it to work correctly before I give it to him. I need it fixed asap since his bday is fast approaching, I feel I'm screwed. I tried googling, dived into some forums and saw a lot of similar problems but no real solution.

Some says to reformat the memory stick, some suggests to plug it on different usb port or try it on different computer, some told me to uninstall usb drivers on the device manager and reboot to let windows reinstall it...BUT nothing of those works for me, then I came up into a conclusion that may be the usb cable is defective so i bought a new cable and VOILA! I got it working.. I never thought the problem was the usb cable since it was working a day ago. haha. I am happy now :)

No IE onboard Windows 7 in Europe

Labels: ,

European buyers of Windows 7 will have to download and install a web browser for themselves.

Bowing to European competition rules, Microsoft Windows 7 will ship without Internet Explorer.
The company said it would make it easy for PC makers and users to get at and install the web browsing program.
In response the European Commission expressed scepticism over the move and whether it would allay accusations of Microsoft abusing its market position.
Abusive behaviour
"We're committed to making Windows 7 available in Europe at the same time that it launches in the rest of the world," Dave Heiner, Microsoft deputy general counsel, said in a statement, "but we also must comply with European competition law as we launch the product.
"We believe that this new approach, while not our first choice, is the best path forward given the ongoing legal case in Europe."
In response the European Commission said "it would also have to consider whether this initial step of technical separation of IE from Windows could be negated by other actions by Microsoft".
In early 2008, Microsoft was fined 899m euros (£765m) by the European Commission for anti-competitive behaviour over bundling in the media player and browser into Windows.
In January 2009, Brussels reached a "preliminary view" that Microsoft was denting the chance for true competition by bundling its browser software in with its operating system.
Microsoft is due to defend itself against the charges in a hearing.
If Microsoft fails to convince the Commission that it is not harming competition could mean more fines and enforced changes to the way it does business.
"We're committed to launching Windows 7 on time in Europe, so we need to address the legal realities in Europe, including the risk of large fines," said Mr Heiner.
Windows 7 is due to be released worldwide on 22 October.
"In terms of potential remedies, if the Commission were to find that Microsoft had committed an abuse, the Commission has suggested that consumers should be offered a choice of browser not that Windows should be supplied without a browser at all," said the Commission in a statement responding to Microsoft's announcement.
It said Microsoft's approach of offering the program to computer manufacturers "may potentially be more positive" in terms of remedying its alleged abusive behaviour.
It added that if Microsoft were found to be abusing its position, the commission would have to work out if the uncoupling of IE offset that behaviour.

Some customers might not see it but it’s a kind of a monopoly act on the side of M$ since they are more concerned on their side than the concerns of their EU customers. M$ is clearly again tricking customers. WTH!...I,we, might not see it also since lot of us here is using pirated copy of M$ OS, hehe, but to think that IE and WMP is included/bundled with their OS, it is added to what you will pay.Holy crap!
